Prayer of Confession, E4C

Picture
Call to Confession

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) Let us confess our sin before God and seek God's mercy.

Prayer of Confession

This is us, God,
standing on the edge of the cliff,
prepared to push you over it.
We are angry with the prophets
who dare to call us to behave
as children of God.
We will preach Good News to the poor
by telling them from our place of privilege
how they can (and should) do better.
We have no interest in announcing pardon
to anyone except our own,
because we are blind ourselves,
and we are not looking to recover our sight.
The only burdens we are looking to release
are the burdens of dealing with people
who disagree with us.
Forgive us, God.
Do not slip away from us.
We need you.
Reach out and knock the self-righteousness
right out of us, we pray.
Teach us humility,
compassion,
and grace.

Assurance of God's Grace

God has promised that when God's people confess their sin, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive us our sin, removing it as far as the east is from the west, and remembering it no more. Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, E4C

Picture
Welcome into God's sanctuary, you prophets.
Take a moment and breathe.
You who listen faithfully to God
and speak truth to power
at your own peril
and at the risk of personal relationships,
rest.
In the circle of God's eternal love,
you are secure.

Welcome into God's courts, you protestors.
Take a moment and listen.
You who are discomforted by the prophets
and squirm under the proclamation of the gospel,
who are unnerved by the Truth
and the action it calls you take,
be transformed.
In the circle of God's eternal love,
you are restored.

Prayer of Confession, E3C

Picture
Call to Confession

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18) Therefore, let us confess our sin before God with broken and contrite hearts (Psalm 51:17), and seek God's mercy.

Prayer of Confession

Almighty God,
you have called us,
claimed us,
and sent us out
to proclaim the Good News
to all who burdened and battered,
and to announce your activity
in the world,
but we are reluctant to speak,
and we cower under the gaze of those
who seek to intimidate us,
to undermine your message,
and to distort it for their own purposes.
Forgive us, we pray.
Embolden us by the power of your Spirit
and put your Word on our tongues
that we may faithfully proclaim it
every day
by what we say,
but also by every single thing
we do.

Assurance of God's Grace

Jesus said, "I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness." (John 12:46) In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, E3C

Picture
Come and worship,
you who are struggling to make ends meet,
you who are captive to fear or fearmongers,
to the greedy and power-hungry,
to the angry and the cultic voices
that seek your loyalty.
Come and worship,
you are blinded by idols and their false promises,
and you who are blinded by your own sense of
self-importance,
and you who have never had the chance to see.
Come and worship,
you who are enslaved by systems that seek
to keep you powerless,
voiceless,
hopeless,
and helpless.
Come and hear the Good News of the gospel:
Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of all God's promises.
Thanks be to God!

Prayer of Confession, E2C

Picture
Call to Confession

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) Therefore, let us confess our sin before God and seek God's mercy.

Prayer of Confession

Welcoming God,
forgive us:
our hospitality runs out
before the party ends;
our compassion toward one another
fails the minute we believe
that someone is daring to infringe
on our personal freedom;
our belief in you
and your activity in the world
is subject to proof.
Miracle-maker,
transform our stubborn hearts.
Turn our egocentricity
into love for neighbor,
our self-righteousness
into humility,
our distrust
into faith
that all who seek to celebrate
the wonder of your steadfast love
may find it reflected
in your people.

Assurance of God's Grace

Hear the Good News! In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Then let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. (Hebrews 10:22)

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Come, friends!
Come as to a wedding feast!
Come, and greet the bride groom,
the water-into-wine miracle-maker,
the life-transformer,
God-in-the-flesh.
Come,
and see God's glory
revealed!

Playlist, Baptism of the Lord Sunday, Year C

Picture
I was once asked about my favorite part of worship. The answer: hymns. Hymns provide the space for me to let go and worship God unabashedly. It is a practice for me to create a playlist for each week's focus passage as part of my exegetical process. I would like to start sharing these playlists with you. These are not exhaustive lists. They are *my* lists. I search YouTube to listen to them or download them onto my phone, and I play through them on the piano (though I'm also looking forward to playing them on my grandpa's guitar, which I'm slowly teaching myself to play.) You might add -- or subtract -- from these lists to make your own, based on the same passages, but regardless, I hope you feel free to return again and again to this post each week to be inspired, encouraged, and renewed, and to give words to your statements of faith, your laments and your praises, your devotion to and your hope in the Triune God.

Grace and peace,
Julie

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
