Call to Worship, P+15B

Picture
You persistent women
seeking healing
for your children
and for the world,
come and worship.

You suffering children
crying out in the darkness,
crying for comfort,
crying for justice,
crying for peace,
come and worship.

You who cannot hear,
and you whose voices
have been silenced,
come and worship
the one who will open your ears
and listen to your laments
with compassion
and with love.

Prayers of the People, P+14B

Picture
God of grace,
hear our prayers.
For those who are bound by rules
and rituals,
who cannot see beyond the legalism
of their own making,
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayers.
For those who worship
with their tongues --
who say the words, but do not internalize them,
who go through the motions, but do not feel anything,
who sing the songs and pray the prayers,
but leave unchanged
and empty,
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayers.
For a world of people who struggle
with anger,
addiction,
and arrogance,
unmoved by your compassion,
unable to love as you love,
Lord in your mercy,
hear our prayers.
Cleanse our hearts, O God.
Remove the pollution from our souls.
Transform us into a people
who glorify your name
with passion
and
in truth,
that all who look upon your children everywhere
call see the love of Christ
in all we say and do.

Prayer of Confession, P+14B

Picture
Call to Confession

If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. (James 1:26) Let us confess our sin before God, and seek God's mercy.

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us, God.
We are quick to point out the speck
in our neighbor's eye
and slow to remove the log
in our own.
We tithe mint, and dill, and cumin,
and ignore, downplay, and even mock
matters of justice, mercy, and faithfulness.
We clean the outside of cups and plates
which are full to overflowing
with greed and self-indulgence.
Our worship is meaningless
because we refuse to live out our identity
as children of a loving
and compassionate
God.
We profess your name,
but deny you with our self-righteous behavior.
We do not have the love of God within us.
Have mercy on us, we pray.
Cleanse our hands and purify our hearts,
so that all we say and do --
every word, every action --
reflects the love you and peace and mercy
in which we have been created
and recreated
every day of our lives.

Assurance of God's Grace

God has promised that when we confess our sin, God who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins, removing them as far as the east is from the west, and remembering them no more. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Listen, people, and understand:
Worship the Lord your God
with all your heart,
and with all your soul,

Prayer of Confession, P+12B

Picture
Call to Confession

God did not send God's Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. (John 3:17) Let us confess our sin before God, and receive God's mercy.

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us, God.
We have lost our hearty appetite
for you.
Instead, we snack on bread that was meant to sustain us
only for a day ...
bread that will not keep us from dying
in wildernesses
of our own making.
This is the bread we choose
as we stray from your Table
and the feast of eternity
that is laid out for us there.
Forgive us, we pray,
because the bread of the moment
is not made with the same kind of fortitude.
It leaves us hungry,
and hungry people find it difficult
to love radically
and share extravagant grace
as Jesus did.
Breathe life into the cosmos, Living Bread;
breathe life into our spirits,
so that we too can meet your people
where they are
and offer them the Bread of Life
according to your will.

Assurance of God's Grace

In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. (1 John 4:10) In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Prayer of Confession, P+11B

Picture
Call to Confession

And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. (Hebrews 4:13) Let us confess our sin before God and seek God's mercy.

Prayer of Confession

Bread of Life,
We are believers who wrestle with faith.
We are grumblers,
grumbling amongst ourselves
about you ...
YOU ...
yes, you ...
because we do not like your radical love
and extravagant grace
except when it benefits us.
We hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for justice,
for peace,
but our righteousness looks different than yours;
our justice is not justice in your sight.
We hunger for the Bread of Life
and thirst for Living Water.
Daily.
But we wait too long between feasting,
and our bodies, minds, and spirits wane
from lack of nourishment,
and it shows in our work,
and in our energy,
in our relationships,
and in our spirits.
God, forgive us.
Tell us again how to love as you love.
Nourish us anew with the Bread of Heaven,
and raise us up with you.

Assurance of God's Grace

God said, "This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
after those days, says the Lord:
I will put my laws in their minds,
and write them on their hearts,
and I will be their God,
and they shall be my people."  (Hebrews 8:10) In the name of Jesus Christ, the fulfillment of the covenant God made with God's people, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Believers, complainers, compelled, and hungry,
come now to the Bread of Life,
and live eternally.

Hunger and thirst no more, but be raised up
by the bread that came down from Heaven
and live forever as a child of God.

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
