Prayer of Confession, A1B

Picture
Call to Confession

O Jerusalem, wash your heart clean of wickedness
so that you may be saved.
How long shall your evil schemes
    lodge within you?  (Jeremiah 4:14)

Let us confess the evil schemes that reside within us, and seek the cleansing of our hearts from its wickedness:

Prayer of Confession

Create in us a new heart, O God,
and put a new and right spirit within us.
Transform our sense of entitlement
and give us compassion
and grace.
Transform our need for power
and give us humility
and a longing for equity.
Transform our propensity for greed
and give us a passion for justice
and a burning desire to share.
Transform the fear that underlies
all our selfishness
and give us love
beyond all loving
and hope for peace
across the world.
Restore us, O God.
Let your face shine,
that we may be saved.

Assurance of God's Grace

Indeed, just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomever he wishes. 22 The Father judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Very truly, I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and does not come under judgment but has passed from death to life. (John 5:21-24) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, A1B

Picture
Congregate, you sheep of the flock of the Great Shepherd.
Gather in, you who worship in awe
the One enthroned on high.
Come and kneel before the Redeemer,
you who long to be healed,
saved,
restored,
and beseech God
with all your heart.
Call upon God's name!

Prayer of Confession, Reign of Christ Sunday, Year A

Picture
Call to Confession

Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to beings that by nature are not gods. 9 Now, however, that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental principles? How can you want to be enslaved to them again? (Galatians 4:8-9) Let us confess the weak and beggarly principles we have allowed to enslave us and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us, Lord.
We come before you pleading
more often than praising,
with grumbles more often than gladness,
with sadness more often than singing.
We enter your courts with a sense of
entitlement rather than gratitude,
with jealousy rather than joy,
with blight rather than blessings.
Our attitudes need a radical reworking,
our hearts, a thorough cleaning.
Hear our prayers for mercy, O God!
Walk with us as we ascend
from the valley of despair
with our eyes fixed on you
as our eternal Hope.
Make us mindful of your presence with us
every step of the way
that we might remember your faithfulness
and give thanks
in all circumstances.

Assurance of God's Grace

It is the God who said, “Light will shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. (2 Corinthians 4:6) People of God, hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Prayers of the People, P+23A

Picture
Hear our prayers, O merciful God!
Hope is our downfall.
We are feeling hopeless
Because we are not inclining our ears
to you,
Because we are not reflecting
On the wonders you have done
and keep doing,
Because we have failed to focus
on your mercy
And your might.
Lift up our eyes, we pray.
Help us to see you at work in our midst.
Help us to hear your voice
In the songs of the children playing,
In the chatter of insects
And the call of animals,
In the proclamation of the Word.
Help us to see you
in the resilience of the suffering,
In the courage of the brave,
In the strength of the grieving,
In the compassion of those who bring
Relief.
Help us to feel you in a friend’s embrace,
In the touch of a loved one’s hand,
In the heartbeat of our furry friends.
Renew our hope in your sovereignty,
We pray,
And grants us wisdom
And grace
To continue on
That we might tell of your wonders
Not only with our mouths,
But also by the ways in which we live.
Amen.

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
