We are most definitely awake,
but we are not wide-eyed wonder awake ...
we are not child-like take-it-all-in awake ...
we are not ready-for-what-is-coming awake.
No. ...

Prayer of Confession, Pentecost +24, Year A

Picture
Call to Confession

the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law—indeed it cannot ... (Romans 8:7) Let us confess our sin before God, and shift our minds to the Spirit as we seek God's mercy.

Prayer of Confession

Lord and Master,
we are faithless servants,
burying what we have been given
in fear of what might happen
if we invest ourselves
in something bigger
than ourselves.
You risked yourself for us,
but we are not willing to risk ourselves
for you.
You risked yourself for all,
but we are not willing to risk ourselves
for even one.
Instead, we play it safe,
and in the end,
no one is safe
because the status quo is retained,
and had that been enough for you,
then we would all be lost
for eternity.
Forgive us, we pray.
Inspire in us a confidence
that you would not entrust us
with the message of the kin-dom
if you were not willing
to journey with us
to the end.

Assurance of God's Grace

By God's grace we have been saved through faith, and this is not of our own doing; it is a gift from God. (Ephesians 2:8) In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this day~

Praise be to God,
who entrusts God's people
with the stewardship of hope!
Praise be to God,
who invites God's own
to celebrate partnership in ministry!
Praise be to God,
who challenges us
to grow God's kin-dom,
with even small steps forward,
for the profit of all!

Prayer of Confession, Lectionary +23, Year A

Picture
Call to Confession

Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand. (Matthew 3:2) Let us confess our sin before God, and seek God's mercy.

Prayer of Confession

O Lord, Bridegroom of the Church,
Forgive us!
We fell asleep waiting for your arrival.
In the darkness, we became complacent,
and we allowed our lights not just to dim
but to go out completely.
We gave up.
We allowed darkness to overtake us
and in doing so, we put ourselves
and those we love
at risk.
Our lack of preparation for the moment of salvation
has left us scrambling ...
panting ...
anxious.
Forgive our foolishness, O Lord!
Encircle us with protection
from the forces of evil,
and help us to trust that the light has come
into the darkness
and the darkness cannot overcome it.

Assurance of God's Grace

"Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that (God) might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.” (Isaiah 25:9) In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this day.

Come, you wise, you foolish.
Bring the light of God's love,
in its warmth and abundance,
and shine it on the path
for all you meet.

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
