Prayer of Confession, E3A

Picture
Call to Confession

The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.
He fulfills the desire of all who fear him;
he also hears their cry and saves them. (Psalm 145:18-19)
Let us confess our sin before God and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession                                  (w/ excerpts from Psalm 86, pp)

Give ear, O Lord, to our prayers;
listen to our pleas for grace.
In the day of trouble, we call upon you
for you answer us.
We have bound ourselves to sin,
preferring power to humility,
greed to equity,
self-righteousness to compassion.
Forgive us, we pray.
Loose us from the idol worship
that entangles us
and diverts our devotion
from you.
Open our hearts and minds
to the way of love
lived by Christ
who showed us what it means
to be children of God.

Assurance of God's Grace

But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the fruit you have leads to sanctification, and the end is eternal life. (Romans 6:22) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Prayer of Confession, E2A

Picture
Call to Confession

Many are the torments of the wicked,
but steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the Lord. (Psalm 32:10) Let us confess our sin before God and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us, O God.
We have no good apart from you.
We have not delighted in the noble ones
who seek to do your will,
but instead we have drunk from the cup
of the idol-worshipers
and the power-mongers
and the greedy.
We have failed to hold boundaries
that keep your children safe.
We have ignored your counsel,
have defied your instructions,
and as a result,
pain and death and destruction
rule the day.
We attempt to silence those
who follow the path of life
with our angry rhetoric
and our belittling behaviors.
Do not give us up to the Hell on earth
we have created, we pray!
Change our hearts!
Lead us on the path of life
where there is fullness of joy
for all your children
everywhere.

Assurance of God's Grace

For God so loved the world that God sent God's only Son that whosoever believes in him would not perish but would have everlasting life. God did not send God's Son to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16-17) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Prayer of Confession, Easter Sunday, Year A

Picture
Call to Confession

For the wrongdoer will be paid back for whatever wrong has been done, and there is no partiality. (Colossians 3:5) Let us confess our lack of love before God and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

God of Love,
forgive us.
We show partiality:
to those with power,
to those with money,
to those with fame.
We deny our connection to leaders who
love unconditionally,
listen without favoritism,
and lead graciously.
We crucify those
who upend the norms of our society
and call us to love our neighboras as ourselves.
Forgive us, we pray,
and lead us to the empty tomb
which stands as witness that love
has overcome death sin and death
for all God's children
everywhere.

Assurance of God's Grace

For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:12-13) Hear the Good News: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
