Prayer of Confession, P+17C

Picture
Call to Confession

All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
    there is no one who shows kindness;
there is not even one.”  (Romans 3:12)
Let us confess our sin before God, and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Have mercy on us, O God.
We are so full of ourselves.
Every task we do,
we expect applause.
Every gift we give,
we want a thank you.
Every kindness we extend
has strings attached.
How do you even stomach us?
How does your Son,
when he gave up his life for us,
and we cannot bring ourselves to live
lives of gratitude for the blessings we have received
at your hand?
Self-made, we claim.
Did it "our way," we sing.
So proud of our pulled up by the bootstraps successes.
Forgive us, O God,
for all the ways in which you have acted
to bring us to where we are,
for all those you sent before us to make a way,
for the privilege we know that gives us advantage.
Humble our hearts, and teach us what it means
to truly serve
as we have been served,
so that we might begin to love
as we have been loved.

Assurance of God's Grace

God has promised that when we confess our sin, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive us our sin, removing it as far as the east is from the west and remembering it no more. (Psalm 103:12, Hebrews 8:12) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thank be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, P+17C

Picture
Come, you faithful,
you fearful
you dutiful disciples.
Come and give thanks
to the One who dutifully did
what he was called to do
for the redemption
of the world.
Uproot your fears
and replant your hopes
in the vastness of God's steadfast
love.
Let us worship God!

Prayers of the People, P+16C

Picture
Rabbi ...
Teacher ...
Hear our prayers.
For those whose resources
are vast,
we pray for compassion
and a sense of responsibility
toward caring for those whose resources
are limited.
Open the eyes and the ears
and the hearts
of the wealthy
that they may hear the Word of God
and be moved by it.

Healer ...
Helper ...
Hear our prayers.
For those who are suffering
in illness,
in poverty,
in exclusion,
in loneliness,
we pray for your church
to come alongside
and offer welcome
and restoration
and relief.
Gather up your most vulnerable people,
we pray, into the arms of the faithful
and embrace them with your love.

Holy Spirit ...
Sophia ...
Hear our prayers.
For the universal church
at work in the world,
we pray for new life.
Move through your people,
inspiring and encouraging us,
igniting new passion for healing work
that creates space for wholeness
and hope
as only you can,
that all that we do
may bring glory to your Holy Name.

Prayer of Confession, P+16C

Picture
Call to Confession

For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law—indeed, it cannot, ... (Romans 8:7) Let us confess our sin before God and submit ourselves to God's law, seeking God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Have mercy on us, O God.
Have mercy on us!
We feast at our tables intent on gluttony
and toss out leftovers
without a thought for those
who are hungry.
We give little thought
to those who are suffering
from illness and pain --
physically,
emotionally,
mentally,
or spiritually --
passing them on our daily round
without a word of encouragement
or a hand of aide
or a dollar in compassion.
Rather, we exploit the weaknesses
of those who struggle to survive
and capitalize on our privilege
for our own gain.
Have mercy on us, O God!
Have mercy on us!
Open our hearts to a new way of being
in the world.
Focus our attention
on those who are voiceless
and unseen.
Teach us to give as generously
as we have received,
that all your children may know the wonder
of your steadfast love and faithfulness
through the mission and ministry
of the church at work
in the world.

Assurance of God's Grace

He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds[b] you have been healed. (1 Peter 2:24) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, P+16C

Picture
Come to the Table, all who are weary and hungry
and crying in agony.
Come and be fed at the feast of the Lord.

Come to the Truth, all who are blinded by power
and wealth and places of privilege.
Come and be transformed by the Word of God.

Come to God's courts singing songs of praise
and thanksgiving.
Come and worship the Lord your God!

Prayers of the People, P+15C

Picture
When will it END, God?
When will your people stop slaughtering your children,
stop hurling murderous words at one another,
killing the spirit
in addition to the body?
When will we start sharing our blessings,
loving our neighbor,
welcoming the stranger,
and caring for the widow and the orphan
and the poor?
Where ARE you, O God?
Where are you in the midst of this chaotic,
hateful,
hurtful
generation?
Our tears are our food day and night.
Almighty God,
you have faithfully fed the hungry
and clothed the naked
and comforted the grieving
and shown hospitality to the marginalized.
You have freed the oppressed
and gathered together the scattered
and welcomed the prodigal home.
Do not desert us now, we beseech you!
Never have we needed you more ....

Send your Spirit to work within us, we pray.
Heal our brokenness as no medicine can.
Rend our hearts and turn them back to you.
End the violence of anger and of neglect.
Put a stop to our abuse of power.
Teach us how to love selflessly.
Grant us empathy
and compassion,
and send your church out
to be your heart and hands and feet
in the world.
Do not let us destroy ourselves, God,
but help us to build one another up
in your Holy name.
Do not give up on us, O God.
Ignite in us a passion that will not allow us
to give up on you.

Prayer of Confession, P+15C

Picture
Call to Confession

For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:14) Let us confess our sin before God and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us, God.
We are dishonest with little
and dishonest with much.
We hoard.
We hide.
We make power plays.
We do not give to Ceasar what is Caesar's,
and we do not give to you what is yours.
In fact, we pretend that everything we have
is ours,
instead of acknowledging
that every good and perfect gift comes from you.
Lord, have mercy.
Help us release the fear that weighs us down.
Reorient our allegiance, so that the only Master we serve
is you.
Teach us to be stewards
of all our resources ...
of money, yes,
but also of relationships
and of creation
and of our particular gifts
in such a way that everyone benefits
from that which you so generously share with us.

Assurance of God's Grace

for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. (Colossians 3:3-4) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
