Prayer of Confession, P+8C

Picture
Call to Confession

A rich man's wealth is his strong city, and like a high wall in his imagination. (Proverbs 18:11) Let us confess our idolatries before God and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Teacher, forgive us.
We are greedy people.
Our thirst for wealth and power
takes us down paths that threaten the very lives
of our siblings in Christ.
We risk their wholeness,
dehumanize and enslave them,
and deprive them,
and we call it
freedom.
Forgive us, we pray.
Teach us to thirst for righteousness
and to march for justice.
Show us how to humble ourselves
in order to lift up the broken,
and to share what we have
with those who have not.
Demonstrate in and through us, Lord,
what true freedom looks like
for all who seek your Will.

Assurance of God's Grace

And Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on, sin no more." John 8:11b Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Gather, siblings in Christ, and put aside your differences.
What God has in store for you is a treasure that cannot be defined.
Gather, rich and poor, and turn your attention
from earthly comforts to the Word of the Lord.
Gather, wise and foolish, and seek to give and receive
love.

Prayer of Confession, P+7C

Picture
Call to Confession

"the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with groanings too deep for words. 27 And God, who searches hearts, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God." (Romans 8:26-27) Let us come together in prayer and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us our debts, O God,
for we have failed to talk with you regularly,
to praise you for your mighty deeds,
to confess our sins before you,
to offer our thanksgiving,
and to seek your guidance.
Forgive us our debts, O God,
for we stand outside the door
(if we dare to come that close to you)
without knocking.
We have decided we know all we need to know
to be self-sufficient
and that we do not need
or want
outside assistance.
Forgive us our debts, O God,
and teach us to let go of control;
help us to pray, "Thy will be done" earnestly
and with faith.
Show us how to trust in you
enough to seek you with our whole hearts
at all times
and in all things.

Assurance of God's Grace

"Out of my distress I called on the Lord;
the Lord answered me and set me in a broad place." (Psalm 118:5) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Come, you who are learning how to pray,
and you who already converse with God regularly.
Come, you who are bold enough to ask for what you need,
and you who cannot find the words.
Come, and seek the God who loves you
more than you can imagine.
Come, persistently, and seek the will of God
whose compassion and mercy know no end.
In God's presence you will find grace.

Prayer of Confession, P+5C

Picture
Call to Confession

But the children rebelled against me; they did not follow my statutes and were not careful to observe my ordinances, by whose observance everyone shall live; they profaned my Sabbaths. Then I thought I would pour out my wrath upon them and spend my anger against them in the wilderness. (Ezekiel 20:21)  Let us confess the ways in which we have failed to follow God's statutes and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

You warned us, O God,
in order to turn us back to your law,
yet we acted presumptuously
and did not obey your commandments
but sinned against your ordinances,
by the observance of which a person shall live.
We turned a stubborn shoulder
and stiffened our necks and would not obey. (Nehemiah 9:29)
You said "love the Lord your God,"
but we worship idols,
refusing to accept your law of love as the law of the land.
You said, "love your neighbor as yourself,"
but we spew hatred,
beating the other over the head with righteous indignation
and arming ourselves with weapons of war.
You said, "love" over and over again,
but we walked by without looking,
without stopping,
without consoling or showing compassion or offering aid.
Forgive us, O God.
Forgive our lack of mercy.
Forgive our insistence on our own way.

In your mercy, do not treat us as we treat others,
but change our hearts, we pray, and put a right spirit within us.

Assurance of God's Grace
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world but in order that the world might be saved through him. John 3:16-17 Hear the Good News: in the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God.
Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, P+5C

Picture
You who are bruised, broken and beaten down
by the hatred being spewed all around you,
God sees you.
Come, and worship.
You who are angrily lashing out at those
who are different from you because
you do not understand what is happening
or why,
God sees you.
Come, and be transformed.
You who are comforting, caring, and consoling
in the midst of vitriol and violence,
doing your best to be kind and compassionate
when your very being feels at risk,
God sees you.
Come, and find rest for your spirit.
Let us quiet our own thoughts
and worship God.

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
