Prayer of Confession, P+9A

Picture
Call to Confession

... everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13) Let us call on the name of the Lord, and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Your faithfulness is beyond our imagination, O God,
and all your works declare your majesty!
Yet your people have failed to praise you,
we have not honored your name
by sharing the stories
that tell how you remain present with us.
Our eyes are trained on the evil in the world.
Our hearts are selfish
and devoted to our own good.
We lament calamity instead of celebrating covenant.
Forgive our foolishness, we pray.
Open our eyes to the miracles you work daily.
Open our hearts to the ways in which we can participate
in your kin-dom work!
Open our mouths to sing your praise
everywhere we go.

Assurance of God's Grace

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God-- 9 not the result of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Gather, you who know the stories of God's wondrous works
and you who don't.
Gather and hear the stories retold
with joy and laughter,
with amazement and gratitude,
with drama and dancing.
Gather and sing God's praises!
Oh, offspring of Abraham and Sarah,
gather and hear the stories of your people!

Prayers of the People, Eighth Sunday after Pentecost, Year A

Picture
God of mercy and compassion,
hear our prayers
for those who are struggling to stand,
who are dealing with muscle weakness
or neuropathic obstacles
or recovery from illness and
for those who driven to work long hours on their feet
and are yearning for a moment of rest
or are walking to and from work
because their budgets cannot manage
the price of gas.
Grant them strength to carry on.
Send an earthly angel to help hold them up,
to give them aid,
to be a source of encouragement.

God of Sabbath,
hear our prayers
for those who are traveling,
who are seeking rest and renewal,
who are aching for time to restore relationship
with you
and with others.
Wherever they go, Lord, be present with them.
Go ahead to make the way smooth.
Go alongside them to make the way joyful.
Go behind them to make the way safe.

God of Comfort,
hear our prayers
for those living in the darkness
of depression
or anxiety
or grief
or uncertainty.
Hold them in your strong arms.
Shine your light on their paths.
Envelope them with your Spirit,
and return them to wholeness.

Prayer of Confession, P+8A

Picture
Call to Confession

And before {God} no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. (Hebrews 4:13) Let us render the accounts of our sin before God and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us, God.
You know all our judgmental and unkind thoughts.
You have seen us coming to and going from
underground places
where we devise our secret plans to look out only
for ourselves.
In doing so, we cause pain to others.
Have mercy on us, we pray.
Immerse us in the light of your unconditional love.
Cross-examine and test us
and get a clear picture of what we are about,
healing our brokenness
and restoring us to right relationship with you
and with our siblings in Christ.

Assurance of God's Grace

When we confess our sin, God who is faithful and just, will forgive us our sin (1 John 1:9), removing it as far as the east is from the west (Psalm 103:12) and remembering it no more (Hebrews 8:12). Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Picture
Hemmed in by God
who knows our lying down and our rising up
and our sitting,
who searches us and knows us
and discerns our thoughts,
and is acquainted with all our ways.
God's hand is upon us,
leading us and holding us fast.
Let us worship the God who is present with us
at all times and in all places!

    Author

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
