Prayer of Confession, P+7A

Picture
Call to Confession

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) Let us confess our sin before God and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Here we are, God,
we who have sworn an oath
to live according to your Word
and then misrepresented that Word
in every possible way
and claimed to do it
in your name.
Here we are, God,
using your law to darken the paths
of those whom we judge unworthy
of your grace,
to steal life from those
whom we deem unfit for redemption
while we claim that life belongs
to all.
We have strayed from your precepts,
have forgotten your law.
Forgive us, we pray,
and lead us by the light
of your Word made flesh,
your commandment to Love,
and the hope of life eternal
that comes through the salvation
we know in your Son, Jesus Christ.

Assurance of God's Grace

God has promised that when we confess our sin, God who is faithful and just, will forgive us our sin, removing it as far as the east is from the west, and remembering it no more. Hear the Good News: in the name of Jesus Christ, the Living Word, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Call to Worship, P+7A

Picture
Gather together, you who are looking for light
in the darkness.
Gather together, you whose worlds are falling apart
around you.
Come and sit at the feet of the Sovereign
and learn God's holy rules.
Come and worship the One who wrote the book!

Prayer of Confession, P+6A

Picture
Call to Confession

Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. (1 John 4:8) Let us confess our failure to love before God, and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

In our haste to prove our patriotism, Lord,
we have put country before God.
We have dedicated ourselves only to the pursuit
of our own liberty,
our own happiness,
our own prosperity,
and failed to consider our citizenship
in the kin-dom of Heaven,
which you have called us to remember first
above all else.
In our desire to be independent,
we have forgotten what it means to be communal,
and have changed our habits,
so that we no longer join the joyful procession
into your courts,
but oh, how quickly we will join the throngs
of angry mobs who post scathing political comments
from our Facebook feeds!
Forgive us, God.
Remind us again who we are
and whose we are.
Return us to the scriptures we spout out of context
to teach us again to love our neighbors as ourselves
and to love our enemies and welcome the stranger among us
and care for the poor
for in doing so, we show our love for you
whom we are called to love first and foremost
above all else.

Assurance of God's Grace

So if anyone is in Christ, there[a] is a new creation: everything old has passed away; look, new things have come into being! (2 Corinthians 5:17) Hear the Good News: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to those whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, P+6A

Picture
God calls the Church
to forget all other allegiances
and to pledge loyalty to God alone,
to bow before the Lord in adoration,
to enter the God's house with joy and laughter,
to set your sights on raising up children of God
who will protect the freedom of all people
in all places at all times
according to the will of God.

    Author

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
