Prayer of Confession, L3B

Picture
Call to Confession

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1-2) Let us confess our sin before God and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Creator God,
Forgive us.
Every day you reveal yourself to us
in the rising and the setting of the sun,
in the blossoming of new life,
in the flow of life-giving water,
in the teeming of sea creatures
and in the playful antics of land animals,
and in the birdsong.
Every day you speak to us
through the Word,
written and Incarnate,
living and dynamic,
read and proclaimed
through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Still, we ignore it.
Still, we deny it.
Still, we refute it.
Still, we misrepresent it.
Forgive us, we pray!
Open our eyes to what is before us.
Open our ears to what is around us.
Open our hearts to what is within us.
Open our minds to new understanding.
Let the Spirit of Truth
blow afresh through our lives
and recreate us into the people
you have called us to be!

Assurance of God's Grace

All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” (Acts 10:43) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, L3B

The Creator calls through the
firmament,
through the rising of the sun
and through its setting,
through the ordinances and decrees
expressed in Logos ...
the Word ...
living and dynamic
and enduring forever.
The Creator calls
to all of creation:
Come and worship.

Prayer of Confession, L2B

Picture
Call to Confession

God said, "Turn to me and be saved,
all the ends of the earth!
For I am God, and there is no other." (Isaiah 45:22)
Let us turn to God and seek God's grace:

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us, God.
We are the creators of systems
that afflict the afflicted,
and we hide our faces
from those who cry out for justice.
We are the hoarders
of resources
that keep the poor in poverty
and prevent their children
from eating their fill.
We do not live for you ...
we live for ourselves
and ourselves alone,
seeking to promote our own interests
rather than communal interests
that benefit and enrich us all
by empowering those whose voices
we have silenced
by our actions and our laws.
In your mercy, Lord, hear our prayers!
Forgive our performative worship
and transform our hearts
that we truly proclaim deliverance
and be the avenue by which you work ...
the Body of Christ
at work in the world.
May it be so.

Assurance of God's Grace

For our sake God made the one who knew no sin to be sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, L2B

Picture
Gather in, you who stand in awe of God.
Congregate, you who have called out to God
in despair,
and you who have lifted God's name
in praise.
Come, you poor and hungry,
you unhoused neighbors
sleeping in the dust.
You are God's beloved children.
Come, and worship.

Prayer of Confession, L1B

Picture
Call to Confession

(God said, ) I alone am the one
who blots out your transgressions for my own sake,
and I will not remember your sins. (Isaiah 43:25) Let us confess our transgressions before the God and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Lord, have mercy on us!
We go about our lives,
heads hanging down,
chins to our chest,
eyes on the ground below us
instead of looking up and out
where you are at work in the world,
making things happen,
shaking up our lives.
We call upon you
in moment of despair,
and you answer,
but we do not proclaim it;
instead, we go about our business,
hoping moment after moment
you will come through for us,
hoping you won't leave us
at the mercy of those who are watching
for us to fail.
Take us by the hand, Lord.
Lead us step by step down the path of truth.
Help us to hold our heads high
and to boldly announce our partnership
with you,
so that all who see will know
that you are fair and just.

Assurance of God's Grace

“This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, says the Lord:
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds,”

17 and he adds,
“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.  (Hebrews 10:16-18)
Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, L1B

Picture
Come, you who trust in God,
and you who struggle with trusting anyone,
let alone a Deity you cannot see.
Come, you whose enemies lay in wait,
and you who set traps for those
with whom you disagree.
Come, you who are ready to learn,
to be transformed,
to receive mercy,
to be forgiven.
This is a place of grace.
Come and worship God.

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
