Prayer of Confession, P+21C

Picture
Call to Confession

and shall confess the sin that has been committed. The person shall make full restitution for the wrong, adding one-fifth to it and giving it to the one who was wronged. (Numbers 5:7) Let us confess our sin before God and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

This is us, God.
We are Zaccheus.
We pretend to be righteous,
but when no one is looking
(and sometimes when they are),
we take what isn't ours.
We are gluttons ...
hoarders.
We behave as if we are
entitled.
We are not worthy to be
in your presence,
yet we long to see you,
to hear your voice,
to be near you.
Forgive us, we pray.
Transform us.
Teach us the compassion
and empathy
and grace
that you have shown us
in Christ.

Assurance of God's Grace

Once you were not a people,
    but now you are God’s people;
once you had not received mercy,
but now you have received mercy. (1 Peter 2:10)
People of God, in Jesus Christ, hear the Good News: In Jesus Christ, mercy is ours, and we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, P+21C

Picture
Gather in,
you who are longing
to see Jesus.
Come,
you who are curious,
and you who are anxious,
and you who are hopeful,
and you who have been cast out,
for the Son of Man came
to seek and to liberate
the lost.

Prayers of the People, P+20C

Picture
God of Grace,
be present with your people
in every time and place,
who seek your mercy.
Be present with the proud, O God.
Be present with the humble.
Be present with the righteous.
Be present with the sinner.
Be present with the rogue
and with those who toe the line.
Pour out your grace
upon those who call out to you,
whether they recognize their need for it
or not.
Send your church, we pray --
imperfect as it may be --
to reflect your loving kindness,
to offer support and encouragement,
to guide and direct as Jesus did,
opening doors for restoration to right relationship
for all who have sinned and fallen short of your glory.

Prayer of Confession, P+20C

Picture
Call to Confession

Being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish our own, we did not submit to God's righteousness. (Romans 10:3) We pass judgment on our siblings in Christ. We despise them. (Romans 14:10) We say, "We are rich; we have prospered; we need nothing," not realizing that we are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. (Rev. 3:17) But God showed God's love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Let us confess our personal sin before God in the silence and seek God's mercy.

Prayer of Confession

God, be merciful to us!
We are sinners.
We stand in your courts,
praying with an air of righteousness
and a sense of contempt.
We declare ourselves "not guilty"
of the sins we name in the communal prayer,
but we do not look within.
We do not want to acknowledge
that we break the spirit of the law,
even if we manage to keep the letter.
We hide our flaws and failures from others
and pretend we can hide them from you.
Hear our prayers for mercy.
Look into our hearts, O God,
and see the part of us that is broken.
Mend our brokenness and transform us,
we pray. Recreate us in your image,
the image of Love.

Assurance of God's Grace

God will be merciful toward all our iniquities, and will remember our sin no more. (Hebrews 8:12) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, P+20C

Picture
In this place of grace,
all who stand before God will be heard:
the pious and the petty,
thieves, rogues, and adulterers,
the saint and the sinner alike.
In this place of grace,
God sees all through the eyes of love.
Come and be reconciled
and restored.

Prayers of the People, P+19C

Picture
O God,
you come to us in the widow
seeking justice from her adversary,
in the person of color
looking for equitable treatment,
in the man and his husband
longing to be parents,
in the child aching to be part
of a family.
You come to us in the homeless
cold and hungry,
in the persons who have served their time
and need a second chance,
in the poor
who cannot pay their rent.
You come naming your pain,
desperate to be heard.
You come demanding justice,
and asking for a chance.
You come in faith.
You come with dogged hope.
You come persistently.
By the power of the Spirit, O God,
make of your church
a force for justice.
Bring kindness and compassion
to a hurting world
through the hands and feet
of your people.
Help us to love as you love
with mercy and with grace.

Prayer of Confession, P+19C

Picture
Call to Confession
Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. (Romans 8:33) Let us approach the throne of grace with confidence and seek God’s mercy:
Prayer of Confession
Loving God,
you are our fortress
and our strength,
an ever-present help in times
of trouble.
Your faithfulness to us
is beyond our imagination.
Forgive our waywardness, we pray.
We have allowed the world
and its flash and furor
to tear our attention away
from you.
We have lost patience with waiting,
and we lack persistence in asking
for the things that matter
like wisdom and discernment and peace
and reconciliation.
We return to you humbly,
acknowledging that our voice should be
unrecognizable,
given our distance from prayer.
Yet you, O God, never forget
the sound of your children.
Gather us near to you,
and cover us in your grace
that we might remember
the mercy you extend
to those who call on your name.

Assurance of God’s Grace
The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you,[a] not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9) Hear the Good News: In Jesus Christ, God’s patience is personified. People of God, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
