Prayers of the People, Pentecost A

Picture
Creator God,
Hear our prayers for creation:
for wise stewardship of the earth's resources,
for the beauty that surrounds us,
for the wonder of your vast imagination,
for the joy of endless colors and shapes and sounds.
Hear our prayers, Lord,
for the air we breathe
and the water we drink --
help us to be more diligent in protecting these
life-sustaining elements,
and making sure your children everywhere
have the same access to both.
Hear our prayers, Lord,
for the planting of trees
and other air-cleansing plants,
for the preservation of forests
and parks
where wildflowers grow freely
and where the land is unmarred
by human greed.
Hear our prayers, Lord,
for birds and fish and creeping things
and for all the ways they serve

your grand design.
Help us insure their continued existence
by respecting their habitats
and honoring their space.
Hear our prayers for all your creatures, Lord,
for kindness and compassion
for those who cannot care
for themselves --
whether injured or ill or elderly
or dealing with challenges,
for the marginalized, the lonely,
the oppressed and imprisoned,
for those living in poverty,
and those whose communities are ravaged
by violence, by war.
Send your Spirit, we pray, to hover over your creation
and to stir within it
a sense of unity, a harmonious cooperation,
a loving commitment to wholeness
that you may look upon your creation once again
and call it good.

Prayer of Confession, Pentecost A

Picture
Call to Confession

Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
8 who turns the rock into a pool of water,
the flint into a spring of water. (Psalm 114:7-8)
Let us stand before the Lord our God and confess our sin and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Creator God,
we are ashamed:
ashamed of our lack of awe
when we gaze upon your works,
ashamed of our lack of trust
in your faithful provision,
ashamed of our blatant disrespect
for that which you have placed in our care,
ashamed of our disingenuous praise.
Forgive us, we pray.
Open our eyes to the damage we are inflicting
on our relationship to the earth and sky,
our relationships with one another,
and our relationship with you
by our attitudes
and our behaviors.
Open our ears to listen to those whose relationship
to creation can help us understand our destruction.
Teach us to consider the consequences
of our greedy abuse of power
and to repent
and reconsider our courses of action,
so that wisdom and love
and responsibility
guides us forward
before we completely destroy all that you created
and proclaimed good.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayers.

Assurance of God's Grace

And the one who was seated on the throne said, “See, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.” (Revelation 21:5) Hear the Good News: In the name of the One who has overcome sin and death, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, Pentecost, Year A

Picture
All creatures and creation,
sing your praise!
Lift up your voices to the Creator God:
O my soul, bless God!

You who depend on God
for the very breath that you breathe,
shout with all your might:
O my soul, bless God!

Come, O Church, into God's sanctuary,
and allow the Spirit to ignite you anew,
that you may share the Good News
your whole life long!

Call to Worship, E7A

Picture
You who are watching for God to rise up,
who long to be joyful before the Lord,
come into the presence of God,
the God of Sinai;
come into the presence of God,
the God of Israel!
Come, and sing praises to God
who gives power and strength to God's people!
Come and sing praises to the Lord!
Blessed be God!

Call to Worship, E5A

Picture
Children of God, come!
Come singing praises
to the God who saves us
from destruction,
who hears our cries and answers,
who does not remove God's steadfast love
from us,
but covers us in grace
from everlasting to everlasting.
Thanks be to God!

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.

Julie participated in the 25th Seminar for Certified Zentangle(R) Teacher Training in June, 2019, trained by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. In addition to creating art as a personal spiritual practice, Julie also incorporates the Zentangle(R) method in Prayer Art Retreats in a variety of contexts, including church groups, friend gatherings, and at a local art gallery.
