Prayer of Confession, Easter B

Picture
Call to Confession

No one, when tempted, should say, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil and he himself tempts no one. But one is tempted by one’s own desire, being lured and enticed by it; then, when that desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and that sin, when it is fully grown, gives birth to death.  (James 1:13-15) Let us confess the times and places where we have sinned before God and seek God's mercy.

Prayer of Confession

We are your people, God.
We are the ones you called to serve.
We are the ones you trusted with the message.
And we are the ones who have betrayed you ...
who continue to betray you ...
even as we sit at your Table.
We are the ones who put ourselves first,
who accept blood money
as we give you away
to pad our pockets,
to strengthen our positions of power,
to increase our standing among leaders.
We are the ones who met you --
poor and helpless without a proper bed,
running for asylum with your parents,
living with the homeless and hungry ...
the ostracized and the lonely,
imprisoned by authorities who did not appreciate
good trouble,
and closed our eyes to your worth.
Forgive us, O God!
In your mercy,
redeem us,
though we are far from worthy.
Merciful God,
hear our prayers.

Assurance of God's Grace

Through Christ you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God. (1 Peter 1:21) In Jesus Christ, the risen Lord, you are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of the risen Lord be with you!
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this day.

Call to Worship, Easter B

Picture
The voice of God rumbles like thunder.
Our God has glorified God's name.
Children of Light, believe the Good News.
The Light has come,
and the darkness has not ...
cannot ...
will not ...
overcome it.
Let us worship God.

Prayer of Confession, L6B

Picture
Call to Confession

Let us devote ourselves to loving one another. Love comes straight from God, and everyone who loves is born of God and truly knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. (1 John 4:7-8) Let us confess our unloving ways and seek God's mercy.

Prayer of Confession

If only we had recognized the things that make for peace, Lord.
If only we had not closed our eyes to your teaching.
Our enemies surround us and threaten us,
even from among us.
Our complacency confronts us.
Preserving the status quo to the detriment of our neighbors
is a vile abomination.
What more is there to say, O Lord?
We have failed you dismally.
Yet we show up to throw our coats on the ground before you,
and then when the winds change,
we will shout with the throngs, "Crucify him!"
We will choose a criminal over you
and we will justify it in the name of our God.
Save us, we beg you, O Lord!
O Lord, we beg you, give us success!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
We bless you from the house of the Lord.

Assurance of God's Grace

For you know the generous act[a] of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.  (2 Corinthians 8:9) In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this day.

Prayer of Confession, L5B

Picture
Call to Confession

Very truly, I tell you, servants[a] are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. (John 13:16) Let us confess our sin before God and seek God's mercy.

Prayer of Confession

This is us, God.
We are the ones who are more worried
about saving our own lives
than laying them down
for our neighbors.
We are the ones who refuse to wait
for you to guide us out of our messes
and insist instead
on making our own way,
regardless of the cost
to those around us.
We are the ones seeking the approval
of those around us
who disapprove of your call
to humble and self-sacrificing love
in action,
while pretending to be superior
to others
and to you.
Forgive our blatant selfishness, O God.
Forgive our stubborn pride.
Forgive our ignorance.
Work in us anew to remind us
that it was you who made us
and gave us life.
Teach us how to be thoughtful
and kind.
Open our eyes to your glory
that our hearts might be transformed
by your Spirit at work in us.

Assurance of God's Grace

Once you were not a people,
    but now you are God’s people;
once you had not received mercy,
but now you have received mercy. (1 Peter 2:9-10) In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this day.

Call to Worship, L5B

Picture
Why have you come?
We wish to see Jesus.
The hour has come.
The Son of Man will be glorified.
Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies,
it remains a single grain.
Bear fruit in us, O God.
Those who love their life will lose it.
We long for eternal life.
Whoever serves Jesus must follow.
Lead on, O King Eternal, we will serve you to the end.

Prayers of the People, L4B

Your people, God, are hungry.
YOUR people, Lord, they thirst.
Your people cry in agony,
their only hope to be heard.

Righteousness is lost
in the hallowed halls of law ...

Prayer of Confession, L4B

Picture
Call to Confession

the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. (Luke 19:10) In response to the Son of Man's searching calls, let us confess our sin and be found.

Prayer of Confession

Holy Presence,
we have turned away from you,
and stopped trusting in your promises
that anyone can have a whole and lasting life.
We no longer look for you to lead us toward light and life.
You shine your light into our midst,
and we run for the darkness.
We choose evil over good,
in complete denial of the truth before our very eyes.
Have mercy on us, we pray.
Spare us from the judgment and condemnation
we rightly deserve,
and lead us to a new understanding
of life-giving
love.

Assurance of God's Grace

now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:22-23) In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this day.

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
