Call to Worship, P+15C

Picture
Siblings of Christ,
bring your honest confession
of dishonest behavior
and stand before God in the courts of mercy.
Heirs of the Kin-dom,
bring your devotion to God
and release your devotion to worldly idols
and kneel before the Lord
in worship and in thanksgiving.
Servants of the Most High,
bring your shrewdness
to exchange for holiness
that you may leave this place transformed
by the power of the Spirit at work.

Prayers of the People, P+14C

Picture
Loving Shepherd,
we gather near to you
at your invitation,
with all our imperfections
and insecurities,
and bask in the warmth
of your gracious hospitality.
By your great love,
we are known
and are able to love others.

Be present, Lord, we pray,
with those who do not know the wonder
of your unconditional love
and grace;
who have not experienced it
in those around them
and do not, therefore,
know how to extend it
to those whom they encounter.
Embrace them with your mercy
and show them what it means
to be called "Beloved."

Be present, also,
with those whose loss is great,
and comfort them
as they search for wholeness
and reconciliation
and celebrate with them
when their blessings are restored.

Transform your church, O God,
into a place of welcome
where all are treated with love
and respect,
where the lost are sought
with faithful persistence,
and the poor and lonely
are lifted up
and encouraged
in times of trial,
where sinners are encircled
by other sinners
in humility and hope.

The King of Love My Shepherd Is
Come Thou Fount of Ev'ry Blessing
Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us
Just As I Am
Amazing Grace
The Lord's My Shepherd
Come, You Sinners, Poor and Needy
There's a Wideness in God's Mercy
All People That on Earth Do Dwell
Lord, Speak to Me that I May Speak
You Are My All in All

Prayer of Confession, P+14C

Picture
Call to Confession

The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom (we are) the foremost. (1 Timothy 1:15) Let us confess our sin before God and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Look at us, God, pointing at sinners
as though we are not all saint and sinner alike.
Look at us, God, shouting "hypocrite!"
without examining our own hypocricy.
Have mercy on us, we pray,
though we hardly deserve it,
given our lack of mercy for others.
Forgive our inclination to believe
that rules are for everyone
but us.
Hear our prayers of repentance.
Hear our desire to be
transformed.
Help us to move from a finger-pointing people
to a people of love
and grace.

Assurance of God's Grace

For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, despicable, hating one another. 4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water[a] of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. 6 This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.  (Titus 3:3-7) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, P+14C

Picture
Come, tax collectors and sinners.
Come, you who make and enforce rules
indiscriminitely
without forethought or compassion
and you who write those rules
into law.
Come, you grumblers
who worry more about the impact
of Jesus-followers on your bottom line
than about how Jesus-followers
are helping the downtrodden,
oppressed,
and voiceless.
Even you are welcome in the courts of the Lord.
Come and give thanks for God's
amazing grace!

Prayers of the People, P+13C

Picture
Compassionate Creator,
Hear our prayers for fathers and mothers
who are estranged from their children
or find their relationships stressed
because of differing understandings
of what it means to serve you.
Grant us serenity to accept the things we cannot change,
courage to change the things we can,
and the wisdom to know the difference,
even as we seek to follow you.

Redeeming Savior,
Hear our prayers for spouses
estranged from each other
after years of commitment and sharing life together
because of differeng understandings
of what it means to be a your disciple.
Grant us serenity to accept the things we cannot change,
courage to change the things we can,
and the wisdom to know the difference,
even as we seek to follow you.

Holy Spirit,
Hear our prayers for siblings
at odds with one another
after lifetimes of common experiences
because of differeng understandings
of what it means to serve you.
Grant us serenity to accept the things we cannot change,
courage to change the things we can,
and the wisdom to know the difference,
even as we seek to follow you.

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.

Julie participated in the 25th Seminar for Certified Zentangle(R) Teacher Training in June, 2019, trained by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. In addition to creating art as a personal spiritual practice, Julie also incorporates the Zentangle(R) method in Prayer Art Retreats in a variety of contexts, including church groups, friend gatherings, and at a local art gallery.
