It was October of 2008. I'd been trained to Reiki I for less than a month when I underwent surgery to biopsy two cycsts in my right breast. Once the nurses had prepped me for surgery, I asked if anyone on staff at the hospital was Reiki trained. One of the nurses called the chaplain who came and offered Reiki while I was waiting. Following surgery, I opted out of the pain medication that was prescribed, and managed the pain with Reiki self-care alone. I'm not one to take medication as a rule, but the pain of surgery can be a different story. I was pleased with the results: not only was the pain during recovery very manageable, but the scars are almost nonexistent. There is hardly a trace of the incisions, which I contribute in part to a fantastic surgeon and in part to Reiki healing.
