Call to Confession
The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the decrees of the Lord are sure,
making wise the simple; ...
More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey,
and drippings of the honeycomb. (Ps. 19:7, 10 NRSV)
Let us confess the times and places where we have failed to keep God's law of love.
Prayer of Confession
We are guilty, O God.
We are guilty of forgetting your saving acts
among your people
and in so doing,
failing to give thanks,
to call upon your name
to live according to your grace.
we create gods of our idols ...
those images we worship,
pledging our allegiance
ahead of you
as if they can save us from ourselves.
We are guilty, O God,
of failing to love our neighbor,
of living our lives in ways
that center our attention
instead of the other
and justifying our behavior
by the gods to which we bow.
We are guilty.
God, forgive us, we are guilty,
and the evidence of our guilt is before us
for we are reaping what we have sown.
Hear our prayers.
Write your name upon our hearts, O God,
that we might remember that we are your people
and you are our God,
and love as we have been loved.
Assurance of God's Grace
Beloved, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, let us press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus, knowing that in Christ we find salvation for our souls. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!
Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another. The peace of Christ be with you.
In this time of grief and pain and brokenness, please pass the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this day.
