Prayer of Confession, P+24B

Picture
Call to Confession

It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to put confidence in mortals.
9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to put confidence in princes. (Psalm 118:8-9)

Let us confess our idolatry and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Salvation-Giver,
grant us salvation,
though we do not deserve it.
We have accepted mere humans as saviors,
welcomed them as our retribution,
worshiped them as if they were you --
mere humans who do not feed the hungry
or lift up the fallen
or protect strangers,
but instead cater to the wealthy,
further other the marginalized
and dehumanize strangers.
Forgive us, we pray!
Speak to our souls, God.
Transform our hearts!
Give us a new perspective.
Remind us what it means to be
children of God,
to place our trust firmly in you
and in your law of love,
to care for your people as Jesus taught us,
and to lead as Jesus led,
with kindness and compassion and humility
and genuine concern for fellow humans.

Assurance of God's Grace

But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the fruit you have leads to sanctification, and the end is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:22-23) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, P+24B

Picture
Gather in, you whose help is in the God of Jacob and Rebekah.
Join the celebration,  you who hope in the Creator of heaven and earth.
Come together, you who have been freed from imprisonment,
you, whose eyes have been opened,
you strangers and orphans and widows.
The courts of God are open to those who have been oppressed
by those who abuse power,
to those who are hungry and longing to be fed.
Our God is faithful!
Let us worship God!

Prayer of Confession, P+23B

Picture
Call to Confession

Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. (1 John 4:8) Let us confess our lack of love for God and for one another and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

God of mercy,
forgive us!
We praise you with our lips
and then decry our neighbors.
We exalt your name with our words
and then tear down those who are not
like us.
You delivered us,
but we took the credit,
claiming to be self-made,
boasting about pulling ourselves up
by our bootstraps,
and insinuating that others can and should
do the same
in spite of the unjust systems we have established
for our own benefit.
Hear our prayers for mercy, O God!
You are compassionate toward us;
teach us to be compassionate toward others.
Your grace overflows for us;
inspire us to let that grace overflow.
You love us in spite of our selfishness;
help us to love our neighbor as you love us.

Assurance of God's Grace

God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. (1 John 4:9-10) Hear the Good News: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Prayer of Confession, P+21B

Picture
Call to Confession

Both we and our ancestors have sinned;
we have committed iniquity, have done wickedly. (Psalm 106:6)
Let us confess our iniquity before God and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Forgive our misdeeds, God.
Forgive our failure to check facts.
Forgive our intentional perpetuation of lies.
Forgive our righteous indignation
when we refuse to dirty our own hands
to lift a finger to help those in need.
A plague has broken out among us, God ...
a plague of hatred ...
a plague of anger ...
a plague of conspiracies ...
a plague of manipulation ...
a plague of distrust.
Forgive our self-centeredness, we pray.
Forgive our overblown egos.
Forgive the way we make the tragedies that affect others
about us.
Every.
Single.
Time.
Dear God in Heaven, hear our prayers for forgiveness.
Turn our bitterness into empathy.
Open our eyes to the Truth, we pray, and
transform our hardened hearts
with compassion
and kindness
and love for the other
all around the world.

Assurance of God's Grace

For God so loved the world that God gave God's only begotten Son that whosoever believes in him would not perish, but have everlasting life, for God did not send God's Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16-17)  Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Picture
Welcome, you who observe justice
and you who do what is right
according to the law of love.
'Welcome, you who sing praises to God,
who talk about God's amazing works
in the company of others.
Welcome, you who are struggling
with both justice and righteousness
and with communicating God's activity.
In the courts of the Almighty,
grace is abundant
and opportunities for transformation
exist for all who want to follow Christ.
Let us worship God!

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
