Call to Worship, P+17C

Picture
Come together, you who weep,
you who have been tormented by captors
who bully and torture
and boast about it.
Sing songs of praise to the Lord,
who unfailingly loves God's children
of every culture and creed
and color.
Rejoice in the Lord
who is your fortress and strength,
your ever-present refuge
in times of trouble.

Call to Worship, P+16C

Picture
Gather in, you who are seeking refuge,
you who need to know God is ready and able to shield you ...
to be your sure defense.
Many shout angry words,
but the entire world is not angry.
Many spout hatefulness,
but the whole world is not hateful.
Gather in, and see that there are others like you
who long for kindness and compassion,
for joy and peace.
Gather in, under the shadow of the Almighty.
God is here.
Let us worship God.

Prayer of Confession, P+15C

Picture
Call to Confession

We have turned away from God in perpetual backsliding. Instead of relenting from our evil, asking, "What have we done?" We press forward on our own paths, headlong into destruction. Let us confess our sin before God and throw ourselves on God's mercy.

Prayer of Confession, P15C

We are indeed heartsick, O God,
for our lack of faithfulness has resulted
in a web of deceit we do not know how
to escape.
Sometimes our desire to escape it
is overcome by our desire for
self-indulgence.
We want what we want.
We justify our disobedience by blaming others.
We continue to flaunt our plaything-gods.
O Great Physician, heal our souls!
Turn us back to you, we pray.
Save us from ourselves.
In your great mercy, Lord,
forgive us,
and lead us in paths of righteousness
for your name's sake.

Assurance of God's Grace

Even when we are not, God is faithful, and seeing our propensity for sin, God sent God's son, Jesus, into the world not to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another. The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter today~

Prayers of the People, P+14C

Picture
O Lord God,
where are you?
Students and staff at Evergreen High School,
like too many students and staffs before them,
call out to you, "Where are you, O God?"
Those who have come looking for the promise
of a new life
call out to you, "Where are you, O God?"
Climate scientists and all of creation
calls out to you, "Where are you, O God?"
Consumers and economists
cry out to you, "Where are you, O God?"
The people of Gaza who are starving
and whose homes are destroyed
and whose state is at risk
cry out to you, "Where are you, O God?"
Families of victims of rampant gun violence
call out to you, "Where are you, O God?"
Those who are mentally, physically, spiritually,
and emotionally exhausted by the endless
hateful rhetoric, and anxious about the chaos
that defies all norms of civil and moral precedent
cry out to you, "Where are you, O God?"
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayers!
The reckless abandon by which we are led
threatens the very fabric of our communities,
from the relationships formed in families
to the friendships formed in neighborhoods
to the student bodies in our schools
to the networks of our governments.
Be present with us, O God,
around the world,
and move among us
by the power of your Spirit,
bringing comfort to the grieving,
and hope to the hopeless,
and rest for the weary,
and justice where there is injustice,
and peace in a world at war with itself.
Help us lay down our weapons
and hold out a hand
that we might be agents of love
in Jesus' name.

Prayer of Dedication, P+14C

Picture
Faithful God,
in a world where so many turn away,
you remain steadfast in love.
Though folly and corruption surround us,
you dwell with your people
and bring hope to the brokenhearted.

Receive these gifts, O Lord,
and use them to make your wisdom known,
to lift up the weary,
and to restore joy among your children.
May our offering be a sign of trust in your salvation
and a witness to your unfailing grace.

Through Christ our Redeemer we pray,
Amen.

    Author

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
