Prayer of Confession, P+19B

Picture
Call to Confession

Against (God), (God) alone, have (we) sinned
and done what is evil in (God's) sight,
so that (God is) justified in (God's) sentence
and blameless when (God passes) judgment.  (Psalm 51:4)
Let us confess our sin before God and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us, O God,
for we have sinned.
You speak to us through ancient scriptures
and through the words of our ancestors,
through all of creation
and through parable and story,
and still we refuse to listen.
You remind us how you saved your people
from slavery in Egypt
that your children would no longer be oppressed,
and we participate in systems
that oppress your children today,
through human trafficking
and reinforcing poverty
and rejecting those who cannot pay the price
for an education that would move them forward.
You remind us how you led your people
with pillars of cloud and pillars of fire,
so that they might find shade in the desert sun
and find their path at night,
but we pollute your firmament with smoke,
so that we cannot see you,
and we close our eyes to your direction,
choosing to follow our own way
instead of yours.
You give us water to drink
and Living Water,
so that we may not thirst,
and we quench our desires
with things that do not satisfy.
Forgive us, we pray.
Open our eyes to the evil we perpetuate.
Open our ears to the evil we speak.
Open our hearts to the evil at the root
of all our actions,
and transform us into the people
you created us to be.

Assurance of God's Grace

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. 8 But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8)

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Prayer of Confession, P+18B

Picture
Call to Confession

Our iniquities testify against us ... our rebellions indeed are many, and we have sinned against (God). (Jeremiah 14:7) Let us confess our iniquities before God and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

God, forgive us.
We point our fingers at our enemies
and accuse them of risking our lives
by their taunting,
while we taunt our neighbors
with lies about their habits
and their choices
and even their names.
We are no better than our enemies.
God, forgive us.
We call on you to rain down your anger
on those who worship differently,
who believe differently,
but we who claim to follow you
do not:
we call people names,
we dehumanize them,
we put them in harm's way
by our refusal to listen to them
and to show them compassion.
God, forgive us.
Deliver us from our iniquities.
Teach us to repent from our rebellion
and to return to you.
Help us to remember what it means
to follow Jesus.

Assurance of God's Grace

(God said,) "I alone am the one
who blots out your transgressions for my own sake,
and I will not remember your sins." (Isaiah 43:25)
Hear the GOOD NEWS: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Prayers of the People, P+17B

Picture
Creator God,
All things that have life and breath
exist because of you.
Your imagination is beyond our capacity to imagine.
Your creativity is beyond our capacity to create.
Your love is beyond our capacity to love.
Be present with us in our limited capacities,
we pray.
Open our eyes to the inspiration
that grows
and unfolds
and blooms
and dances
and sings
and laughs
and plays
around us.
Open our hearts to the passion
that is sparked
and ignited
and burning
within us.
Open our minds to the wisdom
that informs
and guides
and exists among
us.
Help us to hear your voice in your self-revelation
through the Word in scripture
and in your magnificent creation,
that we expand our capacity
to imagine solutions to problems
that plague our world,
to step out in faith and create space for healing
and hope,
and to love your creatures -- great and small --
in every shape and color and species
with hearts that are filled with compassion
and actions that are oriented
to justice and peace.

Prayer of Confession, P+17B

Picture
Call to Confession

"
But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who calls on the name of the Lord turn away from wickedness.” (2 Timothy 2:19) Let us call on the name of the Lord, confess our sin, repent, and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

You sing your creation song, Creator God,
and we close our ears,
stomping our feet -- not in rhythm to nature sounds,
but to stamp out them out,
because we do not feel an obligation to care for
that which we do not acknowledge as living and active
in our world.
Your voice goes throughout all the earth,
and we drown it out with the noise of anger
and hatred
and fear-mongering,
with loud and boisterous rhetoric
and exploding bombs
and the ricochet of assault weapons as they fire
at our children in the perceived safety
of educational institutions.
Your law is perfect, Living Word,
and yet we call loving others weakness,
welcoming strangers unsafe,
feeding the hungry enabling,
and self-sacrifice unfair.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayers.
Hear our prayers for mercy,
and teach us to be merciful.
Hear our prayers for forgiveness,
and teach us to forgive.
Hear our prayers for life,
and teach us to listen with new ears
that the words of our mouths
and the meditations of our hearts
may ultimately be acceptable in your sight, O Lord,
our Rock and our Redeemer.

Assurance of God's Grace

"
All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” (Acts 10:43) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, P+17B

Picture
Come in reverent silence,
you creatures of the world.
Come, and listen to God reveal God's self
through the firmaments,
through the ongoing song of creation
that goes throughout all the earth
and reaches to the ends of the world.

Come in reverent silence,
you citizens of the kin-dom.
Come, and listen to God reveal God's self
through the law -- read and proclaimed --
echoing through the ages
so that all may hear
and be transformed.

Come. Let us worship God.

She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
