Call to Worship, P+6A

Picture

Come, you who arrive carrying confidence,
and you who arrive carrying burdens,
and you who carry a little of both.
Come, you who know what it is to long for goodness
and you who wrestle with the choices you make.
God already knows our whole story--
our victories and failures,
our secret prayers and our deepest hopes.
Still, God welcomes us.
Here there is no need for perfect performance.
Only open hearts.
Come, all who are weary of striving.
Come, all who are hungry for grace.
Come, all who are ready to be loved again.
Come to worship the One
whose mercy is new every morning,
whose grace never runs dry,
and whose love is stronger than all that binds us.
Alleluia!

Prayer of Confession, P+4A

Picture
Call to Confession

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) Let us confess our sin before God, and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us, God,
for we have knowingly continued in sin,
expecting your grace to cover us
in spite of the harm we inflict
on your people.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayers.
As baptized children
and co-heirs with Christ,
we behave as though we are
entitled
rather than blessed.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayers.
Born under the law of love,
our actions are anything
but loving
toward the children of Abraham and Sarah
and the children of Hagar
and even those who bear the name
Christ-follower.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayers.
Write your name on our hearts, O God,
and renew a right spirit within us
that we may remember who we are
and whose we are
and live according to the gracious example
et for us in Jesus.

Assurance of God's Grace

God has promised that when we confess our sin, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive us our sin, removing it as far as the east is from the west and remembering it no more. Hear the Good News: in the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, P+3A

Picture
Come, you who boast in the sharing of God's glory!
Come, you who have endured through persecution
and suffering.
Come, you sinners and saints alike,
for God has declared you "not guilty"
through Jesus Christ,
who died for the ungodly.
Come and worship the God who loves you
more than you can even begin to imagine.

Prayer of Confession, P+2A

Picture
Call to Confession

For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15 For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law, neither is there transgression.  (Romans 4:14-15) Let us confess our transgressions before God and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us, God.
You have called us heirs of the promise,
yet we live as though we must earn our inheritance.

We keep score.
We measure worth.
We compare ourselves to one another.
We trust our accomplishments more than your grace.

Like Abraham and Sarah,
you call us to walk by faith,
yet we demand guarantees.
We want proof before obedience,
certainty before commitment,
answers before trust.

We confess that we would rather control the future
than place it in your hands.

Forgive us.
When our faith is weak,
remind us of your faithfulness.
When your promises seem distant,
remind us of your power.
When we are tempted to rely on ourselves,
turn us again toward the grace
that has always been your gift.

Assurance of God's Grace

It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 who was handed over for our trespasses and was raised for our justification.  (Romans 4:24b-25) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Gather in, you children of Abraham and Sarah,
you who have been gifted with faith
and saved by grace.
Give glory to God
who raised Jesus from the dead
and who calls into existence
things that did not exist before!
Let us worship the Lord our God

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
