Prayers of the People, Trinity Sunday, Year C

Picture
Parent God,
Our hearts are longing to hear from you,
but we do not know if we can handle the truth.
We long for you to take us by the hand,
but we do not know if we want to go
where you will lead,
however,
we know we cannot stay where we are.
Hear our prayers, O God.
Speak to us of Heavenly things ...
things that reflect citizenship in your kin-dom.
Speak to us of love
and peace
and hope.
Speak to us of compassion
and mercy
and grace.
Speak to us, Redeemer!
Speak to us of the things that matter
more than the things we cling to ...
more than the idols we lift up before you.
Hear the cries of your people, Lord.
We are crying out for Truth over dishonesty,
for peace over war,
for genuine relationship over transactional contracts.
Come and live among us, Spirit of Truth,
and transform our living
into the holy living
to which you have called us,
putting others ahead of self,
protecting our most vulnerable,
supporting the marginalized,
and healing the broken by listening them into wholeness
and loving them into life.

Prayer of Confession, Trinity Sunday, Year C

Picture
Call to Confession

Jesus said to them, “The light is in you for a little longer. Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you. If you walk in the darkness, you do not know where you are going. (John 12:35) Let us confess the places where we have walked in darkness, and seek the light of God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

You have taken us by the hand, O God,
and guided us toward all the truth there is,
but we have resisted the Spirit of Truth
and sought our own desires
above our responsibilities
as heirs of the kin-dom.
You have not drawn attention to yourself
as we do, when we are insistent
upon our own way,
but you subtly make sense
out of the directives you have given us,
which the world calls foolishness.
And the world calls it foolishness
because it does not know
and neither does it understand
that honoring the sovereignty of God
and the redemption of Christ
through the power of the Spirit
results in deliverance
according to your will.
Forgive us for aligning ourselves
with the world, O God.
Transform our hearts
and make us into the people
you have called us to be.

Assurance of God's Grace

By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world. (1 John 4:13-14) Hear the Good News: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, Trinity Sunday, Year C

Picture
Come, you who are listening for God to speak,
and you who are unable to bear what you might hear.
Come, you who are longing for the Spirit of Truth
and you who are not certain you will recognize it
in the midst of the world's deceitfulness.
Come, you who glorify Jesus with your encouraging words
and your hymns of praise,
and you who cannot find the heart to sing.
Healing awaits
in the name of the Creator, the Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
Come and worship.

Prayer of Confession, Pentecost, Year C

Picture
Call to Confession

I will give them one heart and put a new spirit within them;[c] I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, 20 so that they may follow my statutes and keep my ordinances and obey them. Then they shall be my people, and I will be their God. (Ezekiel 11:19-20) Let us confess our sin before God, surrendering our hearts to God's transformative power.

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us, God.
We are bewildered.
We hear you speaking to us
and to our various concerns
and fears
and frustrations,
and we sneer.
Could this be real?
Are the prophets and apostles
who carry your Truth
drunk?
Could you truly be calling us
to radical love
and transforming ministry?
God, help us if you are!
Who are we
that you should entrust us
with the task of prophesy in this time?
Send your Spirit, we pray,
like a rush of violent wind
as you did on the day of Pentecost.
We need to feel you here ...
around us,
within us,
among us.
Remove our hearts of stone, O God,
and give us hearts of flesh.
Remind us who we are
and whose we are,
that all we do will bring glory
to your name.

Assurance of God's Grace

But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water[a] of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.  (Titus 3:4-5) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
