Prayer of Confession, L5B

Picture
Call to Confession

Do not remember the sins of (our) youth or (our) transgressions;
according to your steadfast love remember (us),
for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!  (Psalm 25:7)
Let us confess our sins before God, and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us, O God!
We have not followed the map
laid out in your word.
We have not single-mindedly pursued you
or the wise living you prescribe.
We have tried to make
our own way,
and in doing so,
have made a solid mess of things.
We have not loved you
with all our hearts
and all our souls
and all our minds
and all our strength.
We have not loved our enemies.
We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
Create in us a new heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within us.
Give us a new perspective, we pray,
that we might delight in your counsel
and reorient ourselves
to Your will.

Assurance of God's Grace

(Jesus said,) "Already you have been cleansed because of the word I have spoken to you." Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Come, you young in years
and you young at heart!
Come you who seek the Lord
and you who have been walking with God
in faith already.
Come and meditate on God's Word.
Come and delight in God's laws.
Come and declare God's ordinances.
Let us worship God!

Prayer of Confession, L4B

Picture
Call to Confession

How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? (Proverbs 1:22) Let us confess our simple-mindedness, our scoffing, and our hatred of knowledge before the Lord and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us, O God,
our sins have made us sick;
our sins have caused dis-ease in others,
in our society,
in our world.
We have chosen simple-mindedness
rather than expansiveness,
chosen foolishness
over wisdom.
Out of our refusal
to accept new understandings,
we scoff at what we cannot grasp
rather than learning to listen ...
to broaden our thinking ...
to open our eyes
and our hearts
to someone else's experience.
We further limit our opportunities
to learn and grow
by shutting down avenues
where learning takes place.
We ban books.
We legislate diversity, equity, and inclusion.
We segregate ourselves
and demand that those unlike us
"return to the places from which they came."
Send out your word, O God,
and heal us,
for we are far from the example
you set for us in Christ.
Transform our hearts, we pray,
that we may heal one another
and the world.

Assurance of God's Grace

(The Lord) forgives all our iniquity,

    who heals all our diseases,
4 ... redeems our life from the Pit,
... (and) crowns us with steadfast love and mercy, ... (Psalm 103:3-4) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, L4B

Picture
Come from the north
and the south
and the east
and the west!
Come, you sin-sick
and you who are near
death's door.
Come, you who are
crying out to God
and you who have
been saved from your distress.
Come and thank the Lord
with songs of celebration!

    Author

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
