Call to Confession

When one will not listen to the law,
even one’s prayers are an abomination.  (Proverbs 28:9)
Let us confess our lack of listening and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us, God.
We are trembling.
But your people are not trembling because of you.
Your people are trembling because we believe
that we have usurped your power,
and we prove that by the power we have given away,
concentrating it in a handful of people
who are using it to wield a chainsaw.
Your people believe that we should be exalted
above you,
and we prove that by the pride we take
in tearing down justice,
in dismantling equity,
in defying righteousness.
Like Moses and Aaron and Samuel, we cry out to you!
We call on your holy name!
Forgive us, we pray!
Speak to us, O God!
Empower today's prophets to speak your decrees.
Equip your teachers to guide your children
to the statutes they claim to live by
as followers of  Christ.
Open our ears to listen, O God!
Open our hearts to be transformed.
Make us into the people you have called us to be
before we are consumed
by our own destructive behaviors.

Assurance of God's Grace

Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, Transfiguration Sunday, Year C

Picture
Welcome, you kin-dom people:
you to whom God has spoken
and still speaks,
you who have kept God's decrees
and the statutes God gave you,
you whom God has forgiven
and avenged:
The Lord is king.
God is a lover of justice.
God will establish equity.
Worship the Lord,
for the Lord our God is purposeful.

Prayer of Confession, E+7C

Call to Confession

“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
and the flower falls, (1 Peter 1:24)
Let us confess our withered falling before the Lord, and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us, Lord.
We are fretting.
Instead of putting our trust in you,
we are freaking.
out.
We are envious of wrongdoers
who always seem to land
on their feet,
wealthier and more powerful
than they were before,
and it's frustrating.
Why do the ones who create the most
chaos
get pacified?
Why do cheaters always seem to win?
Forgive us, Lord.
We have not fully committed to you.
We do not delight in spending time with you.
We're busy, you know,
and justice seeking takes a back seat.
Standing up for truth and goodness
is exhausting.
We grow impatient and angry,
and we undo what little good we had done,
and we betray you.
Forgive us, we pray,
and teach us to trust in what we cannot see.

Assurance of God's Grace

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— (Ephesians 2:8) Hear the Good News: in the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, E+7C

Picture
You who are anxious about the chaos of the wicked
and the angry rhetoric of those who use God's name
to oppress and to create harm,
come and worship.
Take comfort in God whose sovereignty is sure.

You who are envious of the boldness of wrongdoers
and the ways
in which they appear to come out
“smelling like a rose,"
come and worship.
Hear God's reminder that they will fade like the grass.

You meek, and you who are seeking refuge,
come and worship.
God's promises are sure, and you can find rest
for your weary hearts.

You who trust in the Lord,
who delight in
hearing the Word read and proclaimed,
come and worship.
Reach out to those among you who need support
and encourage them.

Prayer of Confession, E+6C

Picture
Call to Confession

The boastful will not stand before (God's) eyes;
(God) hates all evildoers.   (Psalm 5:5)

Let us confess our arrogance and seek God's mercy:

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us, Lord,
we waste precious time on empty pursuits.
We allow things without meaning to suck up our time,
justifying them by any means necessary
to make ourselves feel better
about our weaknesses
and our shortcomings.
We embrace role models and advisors
who pretend to serve you --
who say the things that appear to make sense,
but make no sense at all ..
who play to our fears and offer false comfort,
when discomfort teaches us the lessons we need to learn ...
who call the other evil and lead us to believe
we must protect the most vulnerable among us
from the evildoers,
when the most vulnerable among us are often the strangers
we label criminal.
Those who lead in this way are only serving themselves ...
only aggrandizing their power ...
only amassing more wealth ...
only extending their reach.
God, forgive us for listening to false prophets.
Forgive us for following
where we know in our hearts we dare not go.
Forgive us for going anyway.
Forgive us for believing in any way but the Way.
Forgive us for following anyone but you
in our living
and our loving,
and teach us to love as we have been loved.
In Jesus' name, we pray.

Assurance of God's Grace

In (Christ) we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us. (Ephesians 1:7-8) Hear the Good News: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one another.
The peace of Christ be with you.
Please extend the peace of Christ to all whom you encounter this week.

Call to Worship, E+6C

Picture
Come, you blessed ...
you who delight in God's law ...
you who meditate on it day and night.
Come, you fruit-bearers ...
you who nourish those around you ...
you whose leaves do not wither.
Come, you lost and forlorn ...
you who have not heard the Word ...
you who do not know the law of Love.
Come, you hungry ...
you who are starving for spiritual meat ...
you who are longing to be filled
with the abundance of life.
Come and worship God.

Julie served as a Commissioned Ruling Elder in a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation for thirteen years. She now absolutely delights in filling the pulpit for colleagues upon request, and looks forward to opportunities to do so. Her reformed perspective is sprinkled with humor and presented with authenticity, and she is open to creatively deconstructing worship as a means to helping congregants explore worship in transformational ways.

Julie and her husband, Ray, are parents of three adult children, and grandparents of four energetic and imaginative little people. She is an introverted-with-enough-extrovert-balance-to-keep-her-social, perfectionistic-with-hopper-tendencies, time and goal-oriented, kaleidoscopic, and insatiably curious child of God.
