Music has always been a means of expression for me. Even before I started taking piano lessons at six years old, I used my voice to express every imaginable feeling musically. In 2023, I started thinking about the ancient practices of Lectio Divina (Divine Reading) and Visio Divina (Divine Seeing), which I had been using for years, and as a pastor and long-time church musician, I wondered how it would impact people to experience Audiendo Divina (Divine Listening). I put together an instrumental sequence, telling the Genesis 1 story of Creation through sounds, and when that was well-received by a couple of congregations, I put together a sequence for the Resurrection story from Mark. These stories came to life for people, providing a soundtrack that was new and inspiring. Afterwards, participants were guided through a theological process where they shared what they experienced and how they interpreted what they heard. Everyone in the group was enriched by the expansion of their own experience when they heard from others. I dream of helping people who believe they are incapable of meditation experience scripture through sound in meditative group settings. You can experience this amazing meditative offering by calling A Place of Grace Pastor, Julie Gvillo, at 618-410-5060, and scheduling an Audiendo Divina Retreat for your small group or congregation.
Julie participated in the 25th Seminar for Certified Zentangle(R) Teacher Training in June, 2019, trained by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. In addition to creating art as a personal spiritual practice, Julie also incorporates the Zentangle(R) method in Prayer Art Retreats in a variety of contexts, including church groups, friend gatherings, and at a local art gallery. Check out the Upcoming Events page for a calendar of events, or use the Contact Us page to inquire about scheduling an event with your group!
